Notice for Merging the ASC20 and ASC21

Dear participants of Student Supercomputer Challenge:

The ASC Committee expresses the sincerest concerns for the wellbeing of participants during the COVID-19 pandemic and appreciates your unwavering support and participation in this event! We are deeply impressed by your extra efforts in this difficult time. The ASC 20 Committee has always put the health and safety of all ASC teams as a top priority and has followed global efforts for COVID-19 prevention and control.

After careful investigations and thorough considerations of various factors, the ASC Committee has officially decided to merge the 2020 and 2021 ASC Student Supercomputer Challenges. In China we see that the epidemic has been effectively controlled, signaling that a return to normalcy is not far in the future. We have many reasons to believe that the global situation is also gradually getting better.

In this new season of ASC20-21, we will continue to carry the spirit of the ASC Challenge to tackle the world’s most pressing problems and keep pushing the boundaries of scientific researches. During the hands-on hackathon, we will provide a global arena for teamwork, on-site competition, and cross-cultural exchanges for all the ASC challengers world-wide. The ASC20-21 competition will be officially launched on September 28, 2020. All participating teams are invited to register for the new season. Each team will continue to be composed of five undergraduates and an instructor. The original ASC20 teams can readjust the team members according to the actual situation and need to renew the registration. In addition to QuEST, NLP applications, and HPL benchmarks there will be new exciting HPC applications added to the ASC20-21 preliminaries, which will be unveiled with the Preliminary Competition Notificationin November 2020.  The deadline for submission of the preliminary’s proposal is January 8, 2021, and the finals will be held on-site at Southern University of Science and Technology in China, from May 8-12, 2021.
